What is the shelf life of Colonial Shrubs and how long will it last once it has been opened?
Our shrubs are shelf stable. They will keep for 18-24 months unopened and unrefrigerated - see best by date on bottle. Once opened, we recommend keeping them in the fridge. They should be good for another 9-12 months once you open them. Let's be honest, they won't last that long!!
What is the "mother"? Is the living part of the vinegar. A study published in 2016 confirmed that there are 5 kinds of probiotics (good bacteria) found in the mother of apple cider vinegar.
How much Colonial Shrub should I use when making a mocktail / cocktail?
For mocktails, or sodas, we recommend a ratio of 1 part shrub to 3 parts seltzer depending on how strong you like your drinks. For cocktails, we recommend anywhere between a 1/2 oz to 1 oz per cocktail depending on the drink.
What type of vinegar do you use?
We use raw unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar (ACV) with mother in all our shrubs because we enjoy the health benefits associated with it as well the "funkiness" that it provides.
Do Colonial Shrubs need to be refrigerated?
Colonial Shrubs are shelf stable meaning they do not need to be refrigerated until they are opened. Once opened, we recommend to keep them refrigerated.
Can I use Colonial Shrubs with food? If so, how?
There are many uses for Colonial Shrubs in the kitchen. Just replace any other acid (balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, etc.) you use in your cooking with Colonial Shrubs. Did you know that shrubs are also great for baking? When mixed with baking soda it creates carbon dioxide, which makes muffins, cakes and pancakes fluffier. So they are not only functional, but also add a punch of flavor that you wouldn't get from plain apple cider vinegar. Check out our recipe page for inspiration.
Are Colonial Shrubs Vegan/Gluten Free?
Yes. Our shrubs are naturally vegan and gluten free.
